Sayings in spanish and english / Dichos en español y en inglés

Este post lo dedico a escribir dichos y frases hechas en su versión en inglés y en castellano.

I dedicate this post to write sayings and set phrases in its english and spanish version.

 

Dichos / Sayings:

• “Birds of a feather flock together” – “Dios los crea y ellos se juntan”. Flock es arremolinarse.
• “Variety is the spice of life” – “En la variedad está el gusto”
• “There’s no accounting for taste” – “Sobre gustos no hay nada escrito” 
• “Walls have ears” – “Las paredes oyen”
• “The sky is the limit” or “everything goes” – “Ancha es Castilla”
  
• “To err is human, to forgive divine” – “Errar es humano, perdonar divino”
• “Better the devil you know than the devil you don’t know” – “Más vale bueno conocido que malo por conocer”
• “Wherever there’s a will, there’s a way” – “Querer es poder”
• “Easier said than done” – “Del dicho al hehco hay mucho trecho”

Expresiones / set phrases:

• To jump to conclusions – Sacar conclusiones adelantadas
• Come what may – Pase lo que pase
• To have enough on someone’s plate – Éramos pocos y parió la abuela
• To take French leave – Despedirse a la francesa
• To hit the roof – Montar en cólera
• To be double-Dutch to someone – Sonar algo a chino a alguien
• To have Spanish stomach – Tener el estómago revuelto
• To go Duch – Pagar a escote
• Cut out the cackle – Algo así como corta el rollo o deja de perder el tiempo pero no sé cual sería la frase equivalente en castellano. Cackle es cacareo.
• Sb is a hard act to follow – ese alguien ha dejado el listón muy alto, es dificil de superar
• All at once – De golpe y porrazo, de sopetón
• The lesser of two evils – El menor de los males
• By the skin of one’s teeth – Por poco/casi
